Pepe Ballesteros

This research reopens the question of Caravaggio's studio through a computational analysis of depicted light. How did this so-called "Naturalist Lombard painter" design his unprecedented "theatrical light"? In dialogue with the optical knowledge of the time and documentary evidence, we use lighting features to test old and modern hypotheses that imagine Caravaggio's studio practice, particularly his optical references, light sources, and possible use of reflectors.
